COML 602 - Capstone

I am originally from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and graduated from the University
of Dayton in 1987 with a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering. Career
opportunities over the past 30 years led me to live in and experience many
different parts of the country including Wisconsin, New Jersey, Hawaii, Florida,
Oregon and Washington.
Ten years ago, after having resided in Bend, Oregon for the prior 14 years, I was offered an amazing opportunity which led our family to relocate to
Spokane, WA. I am the Director of Marketing and Employee Development for Stoneway Electric Supply. My role, as a member of Stoneway's Leadership Team involves identifying and developing key individuals throughout our
organization, training them to succeed at their current position while helping
them learn new skills to advance in their careers and move into leadership
roles within our company.
Twenty-four years ago, I became certified to teach the Dale Carnegie Course in Human
Relations and Effective Speaking. If you are not familiar with Dale Carnegie, he
wrote the books, How to Win Friends and Influence People, How to Stop Worrying
and Start Living and The Quick and Easy Way to Effective Speaking. I continue to
teach one or two 8-week programs each year and really enjoy working with individuals
committed to improving their lives through personal and professional development.
I have always considered myself a life-long learner and have long had the goal
of one day earning a Master’s degree. Life often seemed to be too busy to
make that happen. I am excited to have completed the Communication & Leadership (COML) Master's Program in 2022 with a focus on both the Strategic & Organizational Leadership concentration and College Teaching of Communication concentration. My daughters have often told me I should be a teacher and as I have moved through my career in the electrical distribution industry this goal has always been on my mind. I am now an Adjunct Faculty member in the Communication Studies Department at Gonzaga University teaching COMM 100 Communication and Public Speaking classes each Fall and Spring semester.
We are definitely a Zag family. My spouse, Jennifer, works as an Office Assistant in GU Health & Counseling Services. Jen and I will celebrate our 34th wedding anniversary this year and are we blessed to be the parents of four daughters who are now ages
28, 24 (GU Grads), 22 (GU Senior) and 20 (GU Junior)!
